Greek Yogurt Taste Taste, Part II

After reviewing a few brands of Greek yogurt last week, I came across 2 more brands I had not previously tried or reviewed so I thought I'd give them the same taste test as before. Same rules applied: I bought the brand in the vanilla or honey flavor, 0% fat, and have rated the brands according to how I perceived their relative tartness and overall quality. First up: Athenos Greek Yogurt Like Fage, it has a little "well" next to the actual yogurt that holds the honey. You can dip it or mix it in. I was a little...I don't know...put off...that I was only getting 5.3 ounces of product, yet was paying about 30-40% more than some of the other brands I've tried. But I bought it anyway.  Calories? 160 - a little on the high side. Sodium? 50 mg. - again,. a little more than I'd like to see in such a relatively small serving of yogurt. Athenos is actually organic ( made with milk from cows not given growth or milk stimulating hormones, or antibiotics ) so I consider t...

Greek Yogurt Taste Test

Greek yogurt is such a staple in the Clean Eating diet that I thought I'd review the major brands ( and up and coming brands ) with a comparison taste test. Please note: I bought all yogurts with my own money. I haven't been paid to write any reviews. For consistency's sake, I purchased the Vanilla or Honey Vanilla flavor of each brand I reviewed, and purchased ones with 0% fat. ( personally, I don't eat the "high test" versions, with some having upwards of 15+ grams of fat per serving. That isn't just Unclean, that is Unhealthy! ) Oikos yogurt is actually a sub division of Stonyfield Farms, one of the leading manufacturers of organic yogurts in the US. It is made from organic milk, and doesn't contain any artificial flavoring, preservatives, hormones, or antibiotics - very Clean. Taste wise, it is thick as you'd expect Greek yogurt to be, and on a "tart scale" of 1 to 5, I'd give its tanginess to be about a 3  meaning moderatel...

Sea Pak Salmon Burgers - A Retraction

Recently, I wrote a product review for Sea Pak Salmon Burgers  where I discussed that they are a pretty decent alternate for beef or turkey burgers. When seasoning is added, they are tasty. However - it has recently come to my attention that Sea Pak Salmon Burgers are sourced from salmon raised and packaged in China. I immediately went to my freezer and examined the box I have. Yep - lower left hand corner. Product of China. Seafood imported from overseas is not as tightly regulated as that raised or fished here in the United States. I don't eat foods grown / manufactured and packaged in 2 specific countries : India and China. Both countries have abysmal safety and cleanliness standards. Both countries hardly regulate what is put in the food supply, and less than honest farmers try to get away with whatever they can. Both countries have poor track records for keeping exported food healthy and safe. To be blunt, you just don't know what is in their food. I cannot, in good consci...

Product Review: Safeway brand Greek Yogurt

Safeway introduced their "house brand" of Greek yogurt recently to little fanfare. It just showed up in the grocery store - and was significantly cheaper than the other "pricier" brands: Oikos, Chobani, etc. I looked at the ingredients: Border food! Added starches, and definitely more ingredients than the other brands. However, the price was right.( This was ignored warning sign #1... ) Fat free, though - not bad...I chose a few of the honey flavor kind, as they had no vanilla ( which is what I prefer )...( Warning sign #2... ) They were on sale - special promo price of .89 each, and if I bought 3, I had a coupon to get 1 free. I bought 4 ( of a yogurt I had never tried before...warning sign #3 ) Here is what the packaging looks like ( this one is plain ): I brought said yogurt to work with me yesterday, and at my appointed breakfast time, peeled back the lid. Peeled it back to find a very unappetizing yogurt in front of me. Thin - almost watery. I stirred it, ...

Clean Eating Coffee Creamer - La Creme Real Dairy Creamer

Since beginning my CE journey, I've made significant changes to my dietary intake. Now, most of the food I consume is clean, having not been processed at all - or minimally processed. One thing I do miss, however - is French Vanilla flavored creamer in my coffee. I miss it. A lot. I've made do with organic milk, cheerfully...but something has been not quite right. I enjoy several cups of coffee in the morning, and it just isn't the same. Non-dairy creamer is a dietary nightmare, and I'm glad to be rid of it. It's essentially sweetened trans fat - gross. However, there's a new product on the market that I would consider a Border / Eh not too bad food. La Creme real dairy creamer is new on grocery store shelves. Ingredients in the French Vanilla flavor? Milk, cream, sucrose ( sugar ) and less than 1% of the following - water, natural french vanilla flavor, disodium phosphate ( keep the product from separating ) , sodium citrate ( a "sour" agent; must be ...

Product Review: Seapak Salmon Burgers

Google Search Term Users: Please note: I've retracted this post and can no longer promote their consumption - please see this post here: SeaPak Salmon Burgers - a Retraction Today I tried Seapak brand salmon burgers for the first time. Normally about $8.99 for a box of 4 burgers ( pricey! ), they are on sale this week at my grocery store - Buy 1 box, get one free. Seeing as how I had two $1 off coupons as well - I got 2 boxes for $6.99: a much better deal. Each 91 gram salmon patty provides 110 calories, 5 grams of total fat, 1 gram of which is saturated (7% and 4% of the daily value), 340 mg cholesterol (12% of the DV), 340 mg sodium (12% of the DV), no fiber or sugars and 16 grams of protein with a smoky taste and a vaguely meatloaf like consistency once grilled. I was not put off by that consistency. They come 2 in a plastic vac bag, frozen solid. I let a pack thaw overnight, and grilled them on my George Foreman grill for lunch today. Be advised they are a raw product. You ...

Product Review: JJ Flatbreads

You know me, if I have a coupon, I'll try a product that fits into my Clean lifestyle. So when I saw JJ Flatbreads on sale at my local store for $1.66 each - and then just .66 after a .50 coupon ( doubled ) - I bought some to try: 7 Grain, and garlic. They are an Old London product, the same fine folks who bring us Melba Toast. Mt husband, a notorious snacker, was instantly intrigued as I crunched and munched on the couch. I offered him one , and he declared them absolutely delicious. We tried the Garlic flavor (INGREDIENTS: UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR), SESAME SEEDS, GRANULATED GARLIC, SALT, YEAST, SUGAR, INACTIVE YEAST ) and the 7 Grain : ( INGREDIENTS: ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON,THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), SEVEN GRAIN FLOUR BLEND (WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, YELLOW CORN FLOUR, RICE FLOUR, OAT FLOUR, RYE FLOUR, BUCKWHEA...

Product Review : Pomi Tomatoes

On Saturday, I had some leftover browned ground beef which I heated up with some frozen veggie mix ( corn, peas, carrots ) and I reached for a can of tomatoes to liven it up. I noticed the little cardboard container of Pomi tomatoes I had bought on a whim, and decided to give them a try. Wow - was I delighted with the taste and freshness...from a little cardboard container! It was delicious, and I decided that I would purchase Pomi tomatoes now exclusively. In the winter when tomatoes just aren't that terrific...these were a welcome addition. • Pomi is 100% all-natural and their tomatoes are grown without pesticides or herbicides • Straight off the vine, fresh taste that has a long shelf life • Pomi’s tomatoes are grown without the use of genetically modified seeds • Pomi contains absolutely no preservatives, water added, artificial flavor, additives, or citric acid • Low in sodium [10 mg. vs 250 – 400 mg sodium for Del Monte and Hunts] • Non-Toxic, BPA-free and eco-friendly ( www....

Product Review: Flat Out Wraps

When I first saw this wrap bread in the store, I was a little skeptical. I've been on the lookout for something other than tortillas which are usually high in sodium and low on nutrition. In my opinion - if I'm going to eat  bread like substance, I at least want it to be nutritious. For example, Mission burrito size tortillas are 210 calories a piece, with 630 mg of salt. Yikes, and that's plain with nothing in it! Flat Out flatbread   is a newcomer to the wrap line, and ( I think ) a better substitute for tortillas. The ingredient list is a little longer than I'd like to see - but most of it is grains of some kind and other necessary evils for pre made / factory produced bread like preservatives, etc. Malitol is a sugar alcohol that can have a laxative effect in large amounts, fumaric acid is a naturally occurring acid that bakers use to improve dough elasticity. INGREDIENTS: WATER, WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, OAT FIBER, WHEAT GLUTEN, GRAIN BLEND (CUT WHEAT, WHEAT BRAN, CUT ...
