Health Benefits of Brewers' Yeast

[ Extracted from the webpage of http://www.associatedcontent.com] Brewers' yeast has been used traditionally for centuries for the purpose of brewing beer and some winemaking. Because it is also low in fat, sodium, calories, and carbohydrates, it is also beneficial for those with diabetes and hypoglycemics. Brewers' yeast is a natural source of Vitamin B complex and highly concentrated amounts of protein, as well as a wonderful spectrum of other healthy vitamins and minerals. Brewers' yeast is usually recovered as a by-product of the brewing process, absorbing the chemicals, vitamins a

What Is Chloasma ?

[Extracted from www.wisegeek.com & http://health.hpathy.com] Chloasma , also commonly referred to as melasma , is a skin condition that occurs primarily on the face. It causes dark brown discoloration, mostly in small patches across the face. The condition is not necessarily dangerous, but it can be treated for cosmetic purposes. Estrogen and progesterone, two female sex hormones , are thought to be one of the main causes of chloasma . Changes in estrogen and progesterone hormones make a woman more likely to develop the skin condition. These hormone level changes can be a result of pregnancy, oral contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapy for women after menopause . The condition does not occur solely in women, it can affect men as well. When female hormone levels aren’t the culprit of the skin condition, it is thought that excessive skin exposure is the cause. The main symptom of chloasma is dark brown speckles or patches across the facial skin. It tends to devel

Health Benefit of Watercress

[Extracted from the webpage of  http://guide2herbalremedies.com/watercress-health-benefits/ and http://hubpages.com/hub/Health-Benefits-of-Watercress] Watercress is a leaf vegetable which we can find in our markets and grocery stores, but it grabs our attention quite rarely. Unfortunately, this is one of the most underestimated veggies, which has very high nutritional value. Like his healthy, nutritious and commonly used relatives, broccoli and cabbage, it has numerous health benefits and known as one of the oldest green vegetables used since the times of Egyptian Pharaohs. Watercress has a wide variety of culinary applications and can be added to soups and salads, used for sandwiches and so on. Watercress livens up raw salad and it also makes a valuable juice. Watercress juice is a green juice and must not be consumed alone. It also tastes bitter and is much easier to swallow if mixed with carrot, potato, and a little parsley or carrot, spinach, and turnip leaves. For opt

6 Sources of Vegetarian Protein

While lean and organic meats ( beef, chicken, and yes - pork ) are Clean, adding the following items to your roster of proteins is a sound route for some who may be reducing their meat intake or who wish to pursue alternate forms of protein for their nutrition. 1. Edamame Containing 28 grams of protein, a single cup of cooked soybeans contains the same amount of protein as a three-ounce steak. Whole soybeans have more than three times the protein of tofu and soymilk, so you’re better off finding interesting ways to cook the beans rather than resorting to more processed versions of soy. For instance, edamame, the Japanese snack, is a form of salted, boiled soybeans, but you can also mash up the beans for a mashed edamame and pita sandwich or to use in edamame hummus . 2. Quinoa Quinoa, the ancient South American grain that’s getting more popular lately, has the most protein of any grain—10 grams per cup. Not only is it a good source of plant protein, but, along with soybean

Real vs. Fake, Part V : Maple Syrup

What is the difference between this: and this? As you might expect from the title of this post...a lot! The upper bottle is a bottle of pure, 100% maple syrup made from the sap of the maple tree. For a strong sugar, it is Clean - and in small servings will add a strong maple flavor to your foods. Maple syrup is divided into two major grades in the US: Grade A and Grade B . Grade A is further broken down into three sub-grades: Light Amber (sometimes known as Fancy ), Medium Amber , and Dark Amber . Grade B is darker than Grade A Dark Amber. From left to right: Vermont Fancy, Grade A Medium Amber, Grade A Dark Amber, Grade B The bottle on the bottom is faux syrup - so unlike maple syrup that anything that isn't made entirely of maple sap (besides a pinch or two of salt or other seasonings) cannot legally be marketed as "maple syrup". Next time you see the syrup isle of a grocery store, or you look into your pantry, take a look at all the bottles of syrup in there. I

Types of Heart Beat

[Extracted from the webpage of www.dilseindia.org] Slow Heart Beat or Bradycardia  Slow Heart Beat or in medical terms called Bradycardia means that your heart beats very slowly. When the heart beats slower, then the body does not receive the optimum blood and can prove to be fatal for the patient. For most people, a heart rate of 60 to 100 beats a minute, while at rest, is considered normal. If your heart beats less than 60 times a minute, your doctor may diagnose bradycardia. In other people, bradycardia is a sign of a problem with the heart’s electrical system. It means that the heart's natural pacemaker is not working right or that the electrical pathways of the heart are disrupted. In severe forms of bradycardia, the heart beats so slowly that it does not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Thi

Greek Yogurt Taste Taste, Part II

After reviewing a few brands of Greek yogurt last week, I came across 2 more brands I had not previously tried or reviewed so I thought I'd give them the same taste test as before. Same rules applied: I bought the brand in the vanilla or honey flavor, 0% fat, and have rated the brands according to how I perceived their relative tartness and overall quality. First up: Athenos Greek Yogurt Like Fage, it has a little "well" next to the actual yogurt that holds the honey. You can dip it or mix it in. I was a little...I don't know...put off...that I was only getting 5.3 ounces of product, yet was paying about 30-40% more than some of the other brands I've tried. But I bought it anyway.  Calories? 160 - a little on the high side. Sodium? 50 mg. - again,. a little more than I'd like to see in such a relatively small serving of yogurt. Athenos is actually organic ( made with milk from cows not given growth or milk stimulating hormones, or antibiotics ) so I consider t

More Bad Food

David Zinczenko is the Men's Health editor who is the author of several great visual aid books on food and nutrition for people who don't eat Clean - but also don't realize what they are eating is rapidly killing them. He has written multiple Eat This, Not That books. He's compiled a great list of some more really bad foods. I find these lists both informative and eye opening, and I like to pass them along to my readers. It is absolutely amazing to me that I was SO clueless what I was eating previously. How on Earth did I make it into my 40's and NOT have a heart attack or get diabetes? 1. Worst Yogurt Stonyfield Whole Milk Chocolate Underground (1 container) 220 calories 5 g fat (3 g saturated) 36 g sugars Stonyfield is notorious for being generous with the sugar, but the 9 spoonfuls in its Chocolate Underground is bad even by the most indulgent dessert standards. Not even Ben & Jerry's most decadent scoop has this much sugar. 2. Worst Condiment  Egg

9 More Ways to Be Clean When Eating Out

It’s a lot easier to find fruits and veggies on restaurant menus, but sometimes the selection is nothing to write home about. Or worse, the portions take a magnifying glass to locate. Ready to change things? Go big. Aim to fill half your plate with vegetables and, if you can, add a little bit of fruit. Here are 9 simple ways to reach that goal.  1. Go a la carte: Scan “Side” and “Appetizer” sections of the menu for vegetable-rich offerings, preferably ones that center on vegetables prepared in a healthy way--steamed, roasted, or grilled. 2. Mix ‘n’ Match: Notice grilled vegetables or steamed carrots listed with an entrée you don’t plan to order? Ask to make it an a la carte side. You’ll probably need to pay extra, but the portion will likely be ample. 3. Open with Salad: Noshing on a raw bowl of veggies is a fast way to boost your produce count. Just go easy

Nicer Melon Slicer

I have multiple  Kuhn Rikon knives at home; I like their handle, the multicolored blades, and they just work really, really well. The small paring knives are excellent, as are the large chef's knife I own. All non-stick, all quality Japanese steel. So I was grinning from ear to ear when I saw this advertised in this month's Cooking Light Magazine: The Kuhn Rikon Melon slicer. It is specifically designed to cut larger, longer melons like watermelon, and melons like cantaloupes and honeydews.      With its 11" long serrated blade, nonstick surface of Japanese steel, and matching knife sheath...this will be a Kuhn Rikon I will be adding to my growing collection. I am looking forward to peak melon season just around the corner and I can imagine this knife will become invaluable. Buying pre-cut fruit is just too expensive! http://www.chefsresource.com/kuhn-rikon-melon-knife.html

Jennie-O Turkey Burgers From Sam's Club Part of Nationwide Recall

Check your freezer if you shop at Sam's... Jennie-O Turkey Store is recalling almost 55,000 pounds of frozen turkey burgers that may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall applies for all packages of a raw turkey product: "All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat" with a "use by" date of December 23, 2011. But if you're not a Sam's Club member, you can breathe easier -- the patties, sold in 4-pound boxes containing 12 patties, are found exclusively at Sam's Club, Jennie-O said on its recall website. Three people in Colorado, Ohio, and Wisconsin fell ill after eating the Jennie-O ground turkey, leading the FSIS to determine there is a link between the product and the outbreak, the agency said on its website. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening for those with weak immune systems.

Couponing Ethics and Honesty...

The couponing blogosphere and forums are a-buzz with the suspected fraudulent coupon misuse shown on TLC's new series, Extreme Couponing last Sunday. It has gotten to a fevered pitch, with thousands of couponers emailing TLC to complain - and I even saw postings by several people who have emailed shows like The Today Show and TMZ to get them to publicize this. I don't know who I'm more disappointed by: the couponer ( who has misused coupons in the past and then had the hubris to do it on national tv ) or the network that apparently turned a blind eye and didn't bother to check the legality of what the shopper was doing! Weusecoupons.com: Extreme or Illegal? You Decide Jill Cataldo: Was Coupon Fraud Shown on TLC's Extremem Couponing? Krazycouponlady.com : Beginner Tips to Avoid Coupon Fraud There are many other postings discussing this, but Nathan at WUC, Jill at Jillcataldo.com and Joanie at KrazyCouponLady sum it up just as well. If you have begun using coup

Food and Mood

I've previously discussed how eating healthier, nutrient dense foods can be mood enhancing. You can experience a definite boost in mood just by eating the right foods in the right combinations. It is a direct reflection of the old computer programmer's phrase "GIGO" - meaning "Garbage In, Garbage Out" - if you put bad code into a computer, you get a junk program coming out. Put bad food in your body, get a poor response from your brain and body. Here is a list of a few foods to elevate your mood and stay Clean at the same time. 1. Spinach Take a tip from Popeye; he did  have great pipes and boundless energy. Spinach is rich in folic acid, which promotes healthy red blood cells and a strong immune system, which keep you energized and free of happiness-sapping disease. If you’re not so fond of this leafy green in a salad or steamed with balsamic vinegar, chop it fine and stir it into soups, stews, a stir-fry, and tomato sauce for a sneaky nutri

Clean Eating Video : Baked Penne with Vegetables

Use what you know about Clean Eating to make this the cleanest recipe possible... make the penne whole grain / whole wheat, keep the salt to a minimum, and use the Cleanest ingredients possible. My husband watched Giada again last night ( if you are new to CE Eve, my husband is a big fan of hers, mainly for the view... ) and this inspired me to post one of her videos.
